

The post office was reestablished under the name Pittsfield from September 1879 until it closed on December 31, 1907. In 1878, a railway line along the Toledo & Ann Arbor Railroad was constructed through the area. The community was renamed Pittsfield in 1840. A post office named Pitt opened on Janubut closed on September 14, 1836. The settlement was formally named Pitt in 1831 and was named in honor of former English prime minister William Pitt.

The county's first school, the McCracken School, was built here in 1825. George Noyes made the first land purchase in the area as early as 1824.

The population was 34,663 at the 2010 census. Pittsfield Charter Township is a charter township of Washtenaw County in the U.S.
